The ethical responsibilities of interaction designers to end-users revolve around their well-being and positive experiences, especially in the context of the growing influence of AI. An essential aspect of this responsibility is to be transparent and open about data usage to demystify AI systems and make the decision-making process behind AI understandable to users, building trust through clear explanations. I also think it is important to provide users with control that goes beyond customization options and takes into account their diverse preferences and needs, allowing them to shape their interactions with technology. I believe it’s crucial to transparently communicate how their data is collected, stored, and used, minimizing collection to what is strictly necessary and complying with privacy regulations.
Using a human-centered design philosophy that puts users needs, values, and experiences first can help us work more morally. I believe that our focus should always be on user needs, creating designs that are easy for everyone to use, and ensuring that designs are accessible to diverse user needs. In addition, I think it is critical to proactively address unintentional biases in AI algorithms to prevent discrimination. Striking the right balance between making designs engaging for users and avoiding deceptive tactics, especially as AI becomes more involved, should be a priority. As interaction designers, I believe we have an important role in designing interfaces that not only meet functional requirements but also contribute positively to the broader social context of use. It is vital to integrate elements of user empowerment, inclusivity, and respect throughout the design process, ensuring that the interfaces we create genuinely enhance the user experience.
