{"id":312,"date":"2025-10-10T06:53:46","date_gmt":"2025-10-10T06:53:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.interactiondesignhistory.com\/Fall2025\/?p=312"},"modified":"2025-10-10T06:53:46","modified_gmt":"2025-10-10T06:53:46","slug":"the-demo-that-changed-how-we-think-about-technology","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.interactiondesignhistory.com\/Fall2025\/2025\/10\/10\/the-demo-that-changed-how-we-think-about-technology\/","title":{"rendered":"The Demo That Changed How We Think About Technology"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The reason why this case is important to me is that I think the fundamental starting point of interaction design began with this demonstration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;The Mother of All Demos,&#8221; introduced by Douglas Engelbat and the SRI team in 1968, was the first concrete demonstration of the concept of &#8220;how humans and computers can interact.&#8221; His mouse, window, hypertext, and real time collaboration systems have become the framework of the computer or smartphone interfaces we use today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I think it is important that this demonstration started not from technological innovation, but from human-centered thinking. Engelbart didn&#8217;t see computers as a machine that replaces human abilities but as a tool that expands human thinking and creativity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the end, his demonstration was an event that newly defined the relationship between people and technology rather than technology development.
