Lessons in Rebellion — What the Early 20th Century Movements Teach Us

The early 1900s were kind of a mess, and artists back then were like “you know what, let’s just do whatever we want.” All these movements like Cubism and Dada basically said forget everything you learned about how art is supposed to look.

What I find cool is that when the world gets crazy, art gets crazy too. Like when there were wars and new inventions everywhere, artists just started experimenting with everything. Some were really into machines and speed, others were making art that was intentionally weird or didn’t make sense, and some were painting their dreams.

These movements show that art doesn’t have to follow rules. It can respond to whatever’s happening around us. When everything feels chaotic, artists find ways to make something new out of it.

I guess the main thing is that there’s always a different way to see things. Sometimes you have to break the old stuff to make room for something better.
